5 Benefits of Canine Massage

June 4, 2018

Okay, we’re sure you’re scratching your head, but hear us out.

We recognize that it may sound a bit strange, but just as massages have magnificent benefits on humans, the same applies to dogs. Not only can it be used as a natural treatment for certain illnesses and ailments, it can be very relaxing. Still not convinced? Read on to learn about the various benefits of canine massages.

  1. Increases the Bonding Between Pets and Owners

Petting your dog can easily turn into a massage and increase the quality time with your dog, which is important to maintain. It instills trust in the owner and makes them feel comfortable being around you. This applies to the seemingly most independent dogs, because they want to spend time with you, too.

  1. Provides Relaxation

Massages are widely known to offer both mental and physical relaxation. The very act of physical touch reduces stress and studies have shown that they alleviate anxiety and aggression in nervous dogs. The physical touch teaches them to become more accustomed to human interaction. They are, consequently, being positively rewarded with the physical pleasures of massage. It will help to heal traumas and illnesses.

  1. Improves Circulation

Just as with humans, stimulating the muscles and tissues of the body increases circulation and increases the blood flow, thus bringing about healing. Increased circulation also allows more oxygen to reach the tissues to heal any wounds, both internal and external. Circulation aids in the relief of muscle spasms and reduces the build up of lactic acid, which cause pain and discomfort.

  1. Allows for Early Detection

Having the opportunity to massage your dog is beneficial because you’ll be able to detect anything that feels or seems off. For instance, if you’re massaging a particular area that’s tender or sore, your dog may wince. You’ll be able to feel wounds and also locate tics or other pests that you wouldn’t necessarily see otherwise. Any lumps or bumps will be immediately noticeable, allowing you to act fast. Early detection is critically important in treating many illnesses and massage will certainly help.

  1. Improves Your Health, Too

Yep, you read that correctly! Giving your dog a massage is also good for you. Science has shown that petting animals actually improves the health of humans. It reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, and elevates moods. This is why so many pet owners tend to be happier than non-pet owners! This is also why therapy animals are so important to human psychological development and healing.
